The Impulse series of electromotive inverters is designed for high performance in crane, hoist and monorail applications. The Impulse P3 S1 inverter line uses high performance pulse width modulation to more closely emulate sinusoidal output current. This allows for variable speed control of the conventional 3-phase induction motors. This overview is Precision Zone’s basic troubleshooting process. Once our repair team starts on the job, we use specialized and customized testing fixtures, Huntron trackers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, milli and megaohm meters, as well as any other necessary tools we have available to assure quality repair work. Most importantly, every repair is fully tested in our custom-built simulators under load with a motor to replicate real-life working environment.

Precision Zone goes as far as using heating chambers and overnight dynamic testing, when applicable, to guarantee performance of the repaired product when it arrives back with the customer.

Repair Process for Magnetek Impulse Inverter Drives

Visual Overview

When conducting a visual check, the technician inspects the drive for any mechanical damage to the drive itself and any printed circuit boards (PCB). The technician then proceeds to verify connections are tight and correct inside the drive and there are no loose screws, wires or debris. Additionally, the unit is checked for any burn marks on the components, PCBs or chassis. During the visual inspection, excessive dirt on cooling components is noted as well as the functionality of the heat sink.

Basic Static Check

Input Module Testing

The input modules on these units can be tested by use of a digital multimeter with diode checking capabilities. Upon removing the cover, all of these terminals can be located along the terminal strip found within the unit.

Output Module Testing

Using the same type of test as above, the output modules can be checked as well. Our technicians are also equipped with huntron devices further verify their integrity.

Magnetek Impulse Inverters Common Alarms

Alarm Code Description Checks
OC Over Current
  • Check all external wiring and make sure all proper wiring precautions are followed
  • Check for short circuits or ground faults
  • Meg motor and motor power cable
  • Increase acceleration and deceleration times
GF Ground Fault
  • Check that the motor or load side wiring is not grounded
  • Check motor winding insulation to ensure it has not deteriorated
  • Check for miswiring or shorts on the load
OV Overvoltage
  • Check input voltage to the drive. Make sure the voltage is properly rated for the drive and balanced across all phases.
  • Verify that the proper dynamic braking resistance is applied
OH Cooling Fin Overheat
  • Check that load is not too large
  • Check externam surrounding temperature
  • Check that cooling fans are working
  • Check that cooling fins are clean and proper air flow is passing over the fins
CPF00 Control Function Fault
  • Check that all boards are properly seated and the keypad is making proper connection
  • Try to cycle power
  • If possible, record all parameters and initialize the drive per the instructions in the manual
