Our Team Expertly Repairs Okuma MIVxx-3-Vx Spindle Drives

Here at Precision Zone, one of our specialties is the repair services of Okuma Spindle units. One series that we often work on is the MIVxx-3-Vx series.

The MIVxx-3-Vx series of spindle drives for Okuma is available in quite a few sizes, ranging from 1.0kW up to 45kW. There is a first and second generation of this unit, which can be distinguished in the model number by the addition of an ‘A’. This would change the model to something like MIVxxA-3-Vx. These units are directly linked with a MPS/MPR Okuma DC power supply unit which rectifies the incoming 3-phase voltage into 300VDC and 24VDC to properly power this spindle drive.

On the front of this unit there are two 7-segment displays as well as a Controller ID switch that changes the addressing of the drive. The 7-segment displays allow for easy status monitoring as well as alarm display if any issues do arise. Exceptions will flash “EL” followed by an exception code, alarms will flash “AL” followed by the alarm code, and warnings will flash “UL” and then the warning code. A list of these exceptions, alarms, and warnings can be found here.

Test pins that can be easily accessed through the front panel of these units allows for easy checking of waveforms with respect to encoder signals, resolver signal, motor speed, and motor output torque. Information in regards to these test pins can be found in the manual located at the bottom of this page and will be on digital page 54 (page noted as P-45).

When assessing the functionality of a drive, our repair team conducts a four-step evaluation:

    1. Visual Overview
    2. Static Test
    3. Checks Under Power
    4. Alarm Codes Verification

This overview is Precision Zone’s basic troubleshooting process. Once our repair team starts on the job, we use specialized and customized testing fixtures, Huntron trackers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, milli and mega ohm meters, as well as any other necessary tools we have available to assure quality repair work. Most importantly, every repair is fully tested in our custom-built simulators under load with a motor to replicate real-life working environment.

Precision Zone goes as far as using heating chambers and overnight dynamic testing, when applicable, to guarantee performance of the repaired product when it arrives back with the customer.

Repair Process for Okuma MIV xx-3-Vx Spindle Drives

Visual Overview

When conducting a visual check, the technician inspects the drive for any mechanical damage to the drive itself and any printed circuit boards (PCB). The technician then proceeds to verify connections are tight and correct inside the drive and there are no loose screws, wires or debris. Additionally, the unit is checked for any burn marks on the components, PCBs or chassis. During the visual inspection, excessive dirt on cooling components is noted as well as the functionality of the heat sink.

Basic Static Check

Output Module Testing

The output modules on these units can be tested by use of a digital multimeter with diode checking capabilities. The following table shows where each lead should be and what the reading should show up as. If any of the readings are very different from the rest, this is a good indication of internal component failures and the unit would require further evaluation and possibly repair. Our technicians are also equipped with huntron devices further verify their integrity.

Positive Lead Negative Lead Reading
U Positive bus terminal 0.31V-0.34V
V Positive bus terminal 0.31V-0.34V
W Positive bus terminal 0.31V-0.34V
Negative bus terminal U 0.31V-0.34V
Negative bus terminal V 0.31V-0.34V
Negative bus terminal W 0.31V-0.34V

Checks Under Power and Alarm Code Verification for Okuma MIVxx-3-Vx Spindle Drives

NOTE: The number shown on 7-segment display needs to be matched with the information flashed directly before the value. This first display can be “EL”, “AL”, or “UL” and each one of these will correlate with different symptoms. A “14” displayed with “EL” prior will point towards over current whereas “AL” showing before “14” designates an issue with the shaft attached encoder initialization.

List of Alarms

Alarm Code Description Checks
AL 04 Motor Power Line Overcurrent

The inverter unit detected over current through the motor power line.

  • Check cables for poor insulation
  • Perform megaohm test on motor
  • Use "Output Module Testing" test to verify modules
  • Check for ground faults
AL 17 Magnetic Encoder Error

The magnetic encoder failed to detect the position data, or mismatch occurred between the magnetic encoder gear tooth number and servo data file setting value.

  • Check servo data (info in manual below)
  • Change magnetic encoder
  • Change magnetic encoder cable
AL 09 Motor Winding Changeover Error

An error occurred at the changeover of winding.

  • Verify if contactor is functioning properly
  • Change the winding changeover switch/contactor
